Long descriptions for some figures in Counterfactuals

Figure 1 description

Three groups of six nodes though which nodes are black or white depends on the group. The first group has one black node (call it node 1) which in turn is connected to two other nodes (node 2 and node 3, both white); node 2 is in turn connected to node 4 (white); node 3 is connected to both node 5 and node 6 (both white). An arrow points from the first group of nodes to the second group. The second group has nodes 2 and 3 as black as well as node 1. Another arrow in turn points from the second group to the third group and all six nodes are black.

Figure 2 description

Almost identical to Figure 1 except that all the nodes are labeled with the degree of belief and which nodes are black in each group differs from Figure 1. The groups and nodes are described below.

  • Group 1
    • Node 1 is black and has a degree of belief of .6
      • Node 2 is white and has a degree of belief of .01
        • Node 4 is white and has a degree of belief of .02
      • Node 3 is white and has a degree of belief of .001
        • Node 5 is white and has a degree of belief of .007
        • Node 6 is white and has a degree of belief of .01
  • Group 2
    • Node 1 is black and has a degree of belief of .81 (changed from the first group)
      • Node 2 is black and has a degree of belief of .57 (changed from the first group)
        • Node 4 is white and has a degree of belief of .02
      • Node 3 is white and has a degree of belief of .34 (changed from the first group)
        • Node 5 is white and has a degree of belief of .007
        • Node 6 is white and has a degree of belief of .01
  • Group 3
    • Node 1 is black and has a degree of belief of .97 (changed from the second group)
      • Node 2 is black and has a degree of belief of .81 (changed from the second group)
        • Node 4 is black and has a degree of belief of .61 (changed from the second group)
      • Node 3 is black and has a degree of belief of .59 (changed from the second group)
        • Node 5 is white and has a degree of belief of .007
        • Node 6 is white and has a degree of belief of .01
